Environmental Issues

Environmental Risk Management Committee
The Environmental Risk Management Committee deals with issues relating to the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) legislation and is concerned that the implementation of complex and unique chemical control legislation will create serious barriers for New Zealands science and technology based industries - especially in areas relating to technology transfer and compliance costs. While the membership supports the broad intent of the legislation, we feel that the methodologies being introduced are cumbersome and costly for the control of industrial and consumer chemicals. This committee is very active in lobbying the Ministry and ERMA in order to achieve the following outcomes for the membership:

  • harmonisation of property thresholds with other major jurisdictions
  • rapid assessment process for low risk substances
  • minimal compliance costs
  • effective industry education programmes
  • protection of confidential business information.

PAINT DISPOSAL & WASTE MINIMISATION:
More than six litres of household paint is sold for each and every person in New Zealand. That’s a lot of paint particularly as much of it is left sitting in paint containers and ends up in landfills. There are lots of ways you can reduce this burden on the environment... here’s some ideas to get you started:

  • Download a Resene PAINTWISE brochure for some useful tips.
  • Download the Resene DIY Info leaflets - including How Much Paint Do I Need?, How to Clean Brushes and Rollers without Polluting the Environment, and How to Dispose of Leftover Paint Without Polluting the Environment.
